A Simple Routine for Rough, Dry Hands and Heels

Which Tall Owl texture to reach for, and how to use it, for hands, heels and elbows that feel rough and dry.

Illustration, not a product photograph: a small amount of balm on a hand beside an open silver tin

Hands, heels and elbows get washed, worn and walked on all day, so they’re often the first places to feel rough and dry. A richer texture and a simple habit make them easier to care for. Here is which Tall Owl product to reach for, and how to use it.

The short version

  • For hands during the day: Whipped Tallow, our light daily moisturizer.
  • For everyday dry spots like knees and elbows: Body Balm.
  • For rough hands, heels and elbows: Freedom Balm, our richest body balm.
  • Warm a little first. A little goes a long way.

Choose the right texture

Our three body textures share grass-fed beef tallow as their first ingredient. What changes is how rich they feel.

  • Whipped Tallow is the lighter daily moisturizer for face, hands and body. It’s whipped until light and airy.
  • Body Balm is a richer balm for everyday dry spots like knees and elbows.
  • Freedom Balm is our richest body balm: a rich, slow-melting balm for rough hands, heels and elbows.

How to use a firm balm

Freedom Balm is firm to the touch by design and melts in slowly as it warms on your skin.

  1. Take a little on your fingertip.
  2. Warm it between your fingers. Freedom Balm softens into a slow-melting layer for dry hands, heels, elbows and shins.
  3. Massage it in where your skin feels roughest, and let it absorb.

Body Balm works the same way. Its butters soften as the balm warms on your skin, giving it a rich, creamy, cushioned feel.

A simple daily habit

Hands

Keep Whipped Tallow by the sink so it’s easy to remember. Warm a pea-sized amount and massage it into the backs of your hands and around your knuckles. For hands that feel rough, add a little Freedom Balm at night.

Heels and elbows

Before bed, warm a little Freedom Balm or Body Balm and massage it into your heels and elbows. Use only a little and let it absorb. Will it stain clothes or sheets? Used in moderation, no.

Knees and shins

Add Whipped Tallow or Body Balm wherever skin feels dry, in the morning or before bed.

Picking a scent

Whipped Tallow and Body Balm come in Unscented and five scents. Freedom Balm has one signature scent, warm vanilla and frankincense. If your skin is reactive, consider an Unscented option and patch test first.

When to ask for help

Tall Owl products are cosmetics, not medical care. A qualified healthcare professional is the right resource for a diagnosed condition or persistent concern.
